King Johns Lodge

The Lodge's ornamental water feature

King John’s Lodge is a fine historic listed Jacobean house, with some parts dating from medieval times through to the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Legend has it that King John II, King of France from 1350, was held hostage by the Black Prince in the house for some years before his death in the Tower of London in 1364.

When current owners Richard and Jill Cunningham moved in, the lodge was surrounded by fields and trees with not even a rose bush in sight. Since the late 1980s, it has taken Jill Cunningham many hours of hard work and loving attention to produce this enchanting setting. The 4 acre garden is composed of at least six different elements, making it a delightful journey of discovery for the visitors lucky enough to be staying at the lodge itself or merely visiting for a day.
