Lord Curzon, saviour of Bodiam
After its rescue by the fascinatingly wayward figure of John Fuller, the Castle passed into the hands of Lord Ashcombe following its 1864 sale by Fuller's grandson.
The 1905 Warden of the Cinque Ports Lord Curzon first saw Bodiam in 1905 and instantly fell in love with it. In 1916, he took his opportunity to negotiate its purchase and embarked on an extensive programme of research and restoration which resulted in the castle as we see it today.
He left the castle to the National Trust which has continued to develop the world's awareness and appreciation of this remarkable attraction.
