The East Gate

The East Gate

Originally the main entrance, this square-towered structure was approached by a steep road rising from harbour level on the north side and crossing Conqueror's Ditch by a bridge. A portcullis was raised and lowered at the entrance and within was a second gate. The solidity of the masonry shows what a truly imposing building the Castle must have been in its time.
