These are home to an intriguing phenomenon.  The slightest sound, whether it's a whisper or a breath, can be made at one end and heard distinctly at the other.  Sometimes known as the 'Whispering Dungeons', it's believed that this unusual acoustic feature was designed to help interrogators learn their prisoners' secrets.
